Last week, we had the honor of awarding six college scholarships inside San Quentin to an incredible group of men. The Love Does Scholarships are more than just financial support, they remind us that education can open new doors of opportunity. They affirm that, no matter where we are, our stories are still unfolding and some of the best chapters are yet to be written.

One recipient couldn’t attend the ceremony, so a friend delivered his certificate back to his cell. Overcome with emotion, he said, “I thought God had forgotten about me. I didn’t think I was worthy.”

Another recipient shared, “thank you again for the scholarship, it was a true blessing and I’m inspired to use it to help other people and make a difference. I want to build this country up, and help the community while doing it.”

And lastly, an incarcerated person who is pursuing work in the Deaf community, said, “I thank you for believing in my mission and encouraging me to dream big. Forevermore, my work in ASL interpreting and Deaf education will be embedded with the DNA of Love Does.”

These stories are a powerful reminder that when we show up with love, hope multiplies.

We didn’t set out to start a food program, we set out to love our neighbors. Right now, that looks like showing up with food and staying to have meaningful conversations with the people we meet. One Thursday back in 2021 we packed a few bags of groceries to deliver. The next Thursday we packed a few more. We blinked, and suddenly we delivered over 15,900 bags of groceries, overflowing with 153,600 pounds of produce and dry goods.

Throughout the week, we deliver to schools for students experiencing homelessness, single moms, seniors, veterans and still every Thursday, we hop in the Love Does Mobile Food Pantry to connect with 70 families in what we call the Neighbor to Neighbor program. Fourteen wonderful partners have jumped in with us, and somehow this beautiful, joy-filled thing keeps growing.

We don’t measure success in spreadsheets. We measure it in smiles, honks from passing cars, and the kid who shouts “THE FOOD PEOPLE ARE HERE!” before we’ve even stopped the van. If you see us on the road this Thursday, give us a honk. Happy National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month!

Pickleball for Poland! https://lovedoes.org/pickleball-for-poland/ Thu, 08 May 2025 20:54:12 +0000 https://lovedoes.org/?p=7442 The post Pickleball for Poland! appeared first on Love Does.

This spring, three Love Does in Action College campuses—Lipscomb, Belmont, and Pepperdine—stepped up in a big way, hosting Pickleball for Poland fundraising events to support the Love Does Launch Program. This program supports the graduating class of Ukrainian refugee students at the Love Does School in Poland by providing scholarships to pursue higher education.

Each event was full of energy, community, and competition, all with the same goal in mind. It’s a beautiful sight of current college students rallying to support future college students a world away. To all the students, clubs, and campuses who came out to play pickleball for a purpose: thank you for putting love into action.

And while we’re celebrating…

We also want to give a heartfelt shoutout to all of the Love Does in Action Club members who are graduating from college this year! We are so proud of you, so grateful for the ways you’ve led with love, and so excited to see where you’ll go and all you will accomplish next. You’re world changers!

Last week, we joined forces with an incredible crew—Lifeline Christian Mission, City View Church, refugee families, friends, and volunteers—to pack 53,568 meals for the students at our school in Burkina Faso. That’s right—53,568 meals filled with rice, vegetables, protein, and vital nutrients that will help fuel students’ bodies and minds! The room was buzzing with energy, teamwork, and excitement.

These meals will support our Love Does school in Burkina Faso, where for many students, it is their only food for the day. To everyone who showed up to help pack meals and make the night unforgettable: thank you. You are part of this story, you are part of the impact, and we’re so grateful.

Hi friends!

This is one of those fun emails I get to write to you because we have exciting news over here at Love Does! I’m delighted to share with you that Jody Luke has been promoted to President of Love Does. I’m not going anywhere and will actually be more involved in my continuing twenty year role as a volunteer. You have probably noticed that Love Does has been busy as the needs and opportunities around us have increased. Since 2021 when Jody took over as Executive Director, we announced we had big dreams for Love Does to double our impact and expand our domestic programs. We have done that and much more. Big projects require solid leadership experience and Jody has certainly brought her years of business experience to the table. Under her direction, Love Does grew from 7 to 14 countries abroad with multiple projects in each country. All of this occurred while we expanded our domestic programs for refugees, single moms, and those experiencing food insecurity.

If you know Jody, then you know she is the perfect person to lead Love Does into the future, because she likes to get things done and is unapologetic in her desire to lead with love and meet practical needs in massive ways. To this end, we are well on our way to creating a world-class university in Northern Uganda! More information on that to come. I know Jody will continue to find ways to honor your generosity while ensuring the sustainability of our foundational programs.

Whether she is talking to those who are incarcerated at San Quentin or the president of Uganda at the presidential palace, Jody brings a huge amount of joy, professionalism, and energy to every friendship she makes and task she takes on.

On behalf of myself, Jody, the Board, and our amazing team thank you for being part of Love Does and for keeping your eyes on the horizon. Together, we are changing lives, and we’re going to have some fun together as we do it in the months and years ahead!

Jody Luke, Love Does President

Celebrating 50 Graduates from the Dream Big Program! https://lovedoes.org/celebrating-50-graduates-from-the-dream-big-program/ Fri, 06 Dec 2024 21:28:01 +0000 https://lovedoes.org/?p=7314 The post Celebrating 50 Graduates from the Dream Big Program! appeared first on Love Does.

We’re thrilled to share an incredible milestone with you—50 students from the Dream Big program at San Quentin graduated! 🎉

We couldn’t be more proud of these inspiring individuals who’ve embraced this journey with courage and determination.

During the celebration, we had the joy of honoring our scholarship winners, recognizing their hard work and vision for the future. We were so happy to connect with those who are part of our Christmas gift program. We had the privilege of sharing the gifts we are giving their kids and family members on their behalf, so they can know exactly what their loved ones will receive from them this Christmas. It was a beautiful way to bring hope and joy to the holiday season!

Our team celebrated Oak and Michelle, San Quentin’s chief deputy warden and his wife, on their retirement. They have been working and faithfully serving the incarcerated population at San Quentin prison for many years.

None of this would be possible without your wild generosity. Thank you for standing with us and supporting this transformative program. Your support changes lives in ways we can’t fully measure.

Next to the San Francisco Bay sits San Quentin State Prison, the oldest prison in California. Every other month, Bob Goff teaches a Dream Big class there, and we at Love Does are honored to be a part of it. Together, we tackle big questions like: Do you still have purpose? What do redemption, grace, and justice look like?

Love Does has also launched a university scholarship program for graduates of our class and is committed to funding their big dreams to serve others through love in action. Our programs bring hope, love, and dignity to incarcerated individuals and their families.

This Christmas, we’re offering the men in our program a special opportunity: to send Christmas gifts to their children, families, and loved ones. These gifts, directed by the men themselves, are a way to show their families that they are not forgotten, but cared for and loved.

Watch this video to learn more about the impact of these Christmas gifts.

Celebrating Beranice’s New Home https://lovedoes.org/celebrating-beranices-new-home/ Thu, 05 Sep 2024 15:16:46 +0000 https://lovedoes.org/?p=7234 The post Celebrating Beranice’s New Home appeared first on Love Does.

In the fall of 2023, Love Does connected with Beranice, a mother of two who was faced with homelessness. Beranice began volunteering with the Love Does Mobile Food Pantry at the Monarch School in San Diego, bagging groceries weekly for other families struggling with homelessness. As a result, a friendship was quickly formed between Beranice and the Love Does team.

For several months, Beranice and her children lived in their car while waiting for housing. Her son’s epilepsy made this particularly challenging. In the spring of 2024, Beranice received an apartment in San Diego through a local housing program and we stepped in to help make it feel like home!
The highlight of this experience was seeing Beranice’s reaction to her new home and furnishings. Our team celebrated with a housewarming party where she served homemade tacos on her new dishware!

Three years ago, on August 15th, the Taliban took over Afghanistan. Today, we reflect on the experiences of our teachers and students in Afghanistan, as well as the families who have resettled here in San Diego. The bravery and resilience shown is truly remarkable.

Over the last three years, our efforts to support Afghan refugees in San Diego have included becoming the largest food and diaper distributor in San Diego County, distributing dozens of bikes, sewing machines, and children’s toys to refugees, resettling over 40 families by providing them with furniture and rental stipends, and providing driving lessons to assist with their driver’s license tests. Additionally, we have hosted quarterly events including trips to Disneyland, the Pumpkin Patch, the beach, Sea World, and the zoo! We have connected Afghan refugees with numerous job opportunities in San Diego County, sponsored educational and certificate programs, and evacuated families to safety in Brazil and the United States.

We are deeply grateful for their hearts and stories, and we cherish the opportunity to know them. Their courage, resilience, and determination in the face of adversity inspire us daily. As we reflect on the third anniversary of the fall of Afghanistan, we are reminded of their incredible journeys, we honor their past struggles, and we celebrate their achievements.
